The Trident and Net were the primary weapons of the Retiarius class of gladiator. These weapons are based upon the tools of a fisherman. The Trident & Net combination is the mid-range weapon for the Gladiator.
The trident was a three-pronged spear about six feet in length. The individual prongs had barbs which inflicted more damage when the weapon was pulled from the body. The trident tip could also be used to trap opponents' weaponry for counter-attacks. Tridents are often associated with the Greek god of the sea Poseidon and his Roman equivalent Neptune. Hades used a similar Bident, which had only two points: this most likely influenced the modern depiction of devils using tridents.
The Net was circular with lead weights around the edge, and was attached to the gladiator's wrist by means of a rope. It was used to entangle opponents limbs or torso, allowing the gladiator to follow up with a strike from the trident. The term "Retiarius" literally means "net man" or "net fighter".
