The Nodachi is similar to the katana in appearance, although significantly larger. The blade is usually around four feet in length, with the hilt being 12 to 13 inches.
The nodachi was designed to be used against cavalry or for open field engagements. The length and weight of the blade made it harder to wield than shorter swords, and almost impossible to use in confined spaces. However, this same size and weight gave it cutting power exceeding that of the katana.
