The MAT-49 is a French-built submachine gun, designed for surprise hit-and-run attacks. It was the Long-Range weapon of the Viet Cong.

Developed by the French, it first saw action in the First Indochina War. During this time, a number of these weapons were captured by the Vietnamese. Lightweight and compact, it was ideal for mobile forces, such as the Viet Cong.

This weapon was tested against the Waffen SS' MP28. It was determined that both SMGs performed almost equally in eliminating three targets in 30 seconds, resulting in a draw.
